4 – Legal Frameworks and Ethical Practice in Responding to Gender-Based Violence

This module explores the legal and ethical dimensions of responding to gender-based violence, with a focus on the roles and responsibilities of social support professionals (SSPs). Through theoretical insights and practical tools, it aims to deepen understanding of how national and EU legislation, including the Istanbul Convention, shapes protection mechanisms and professional practice. The module examines the scope of legal options available to victims, the referral pathways SSPs can activate, and the principles guiding inter-institutional cooperation.

It also addresses the ethical dilemmas that arise in frontline work, such as maintaining confidentiality, impartiality, and professional boundaries. The practical chapter equips learners with strategies to plan individualized safety responses, navigate complex decisions when help is refused, and preserve their own emotional well-being in high-stress environments.
