2 – Violence in the Context of Gender Inequality: Societal Assumptions

This module explores violence in the context of gender inequality. Through theoretical insights and practical tools, it aims to deepen understanding of how cultural norms and stereotypes influence women’s decisions. The module examines how intersecting identities – such as gender, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, disability, migration status, etc. – interact to shape individual experiences and risks and explore the mechanisms of normalization and victim-blaming. It also addresses structural discrimination and barriers to accessing services.

The practical chapter provides learners with an opportunity, through reflective exercises and case-based practice exercises on bias and expectations, to recognize their own attitudes, stereotypes, and their impact on work. Emphasis is placed on how social service professionals can shift narratives and empower women by preventing discrimination, identifying barriers, and developing effective communication skills.
